What is Carbon Monoxide?
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that is slightly less dense than air. Carbon monoxide is known as the silent killer due to the lack of detectable traits.
How does CO poison the body?
CO poisons the body primarily by preventing the body from getting the oxygen it needs. When CO is breathed in, it attaches to hemoglobin, the molecule that normally carries oxygen in the blood. As more CO is breathed in, more CO attaches to hemoglobin and less oxygen can be delivered throughout the body. This lack of oxygen results in the symptoms associated with CO poisoning.
Carbon Monoxide and Heating Systems
Carbon monoxide is a byproduct of combustion. The less complete the burning (combustion), the more carbon monoxide is generated. With chimneys, fireplaces and other common household heating systems, most carbon monoxide problems occur due to improper exhausting of fumes. An obstructed chimney or a blocked furnace duct is a serious life threatening problem with a relatively easy fix. First and foremost make sure to have multiple CO detectors installed in optimal locations around the home, close to the common source, for early detection’s. Secondly a yearly chimney/duct inspection and cleaning will help to reduce the chances of potentially unwanted CO emissions into your home.
If for any reason you believe that you have a potential CO emission issue within your household, open all your windows and call your local fire department immediately. This is a life threatening issue that must be resolved asap.
